Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer

Students who have prior learning or qualifications that are relevant to the Diploma in Aviation programme including previously acquired qualifications such as overseas licences, examination credits, or flight experience, may be eligible to be awarded credit through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Recognition and Transfer (CRT) processes.

Students may apply for credit based on prior formal education including completion of Aspeq pilot theory examinations, flight experience, or licences and ratings obtained in New Zealand and overseas. In the case of international qualifications, validation in New Zealand is required before any credit can be awarded. For pilot qualifications, this includes meeting the CAANZ requirements for recognising foreign pilot licences, as outlined on the CAA website: https://aviation.govt.nz/licensing-and-certification/pilots/pilot-licensing/recognising-foreign-pilot-licences/

Evidence submitted in support of an application for RPL/CRT must demonstrate equivalence to the learning outcomes of the programme. Acceptable documentation includes:

  • New Zealand Pilots Licence (PPL, CPL or ATPL)
  • Overseas Pilot Licence
  • Certified NZ Pilot’s Logbook
  • Certified overseas Pilot’s Logbook
  • Theory examination results from Aspeq
  • Certified training records from a registered flight training provider

Note: The HoT/CFI will determine the authenticity and relevance of submitted evidence at their discretion.

All applications are assessed by the HoT/CFI to ensure fairness and consistently. For CRT, credit will be awarded based on formal records confirming equivalent learning completed through a recognised provider, which is based on specific, documented and clear legal, academic or industry requirements (e.g. registration body). For RPL, credit may be awarded following an assessment process conducted by the HoT/CFI which may include a review of relevant evidence (as per the list of acceptable documentation), an interview, and practical demonstrations to validate competency.

Credit may also be cross-credited from programmes that AIPA is approved to deliver. Additionally, credit from other approved organisations may be transferred where there is a match in learning outcomes. Any credit awarded must align with the level and outcomes of the current programme.

Applications should be made in writing directly to the HoT/CFI. Following assessment of the application, including any interviews and competency demonstrations that are required, students will be informed in writing of the outcome of their application. All credit decisions are documented in the student’s academic record and reported in accordance with NZQA requirements.
